Travis is one of Staten Island’s oldest neighborhoods, located on the west-central side near the Arthur Kill that flows into New Jersey. It is surrounded by Bulls Head to the northeast, New Springville to the east, Graniteville to the southeast, Willowbrook, to the south, Bloomfield, to the west. It is the location of Meredith Woods, which is predominantly a salt marsh that serves as a natural filter to capture pollutants, preventing contamination of the bays and oceans.
Residents take pride in its rich history, hosting an annual Fourth of July parade for over 100 years. The neighborhood offers convenient access to transportation routes like the Staten Island Expressway (I-278) and the West Shore Expressway (NY-440). Travis combines historical charm with a strong community vibe, making it a nice choice for people looking for a quiet, family-friendly neighborhood within New York City.
History of Travis
Originally named Travisville, the neighborhood was named after Colonel Jacob Travis, a resident before the Civil War. In 1819, the area at the site of a Revolutionary War battle, now known as Victory Boulevard, became the New Blazing Star Ferry. This ferry was a main travel hub, with stagecoaches and mail wagons passing through the area to cross the Arthur Kill to Carteret, New Jersey, on the way to Philadelphia. Over the years, the town underwent several name changes before finally being renamed Travis by 1930.
Travis, The Home of the First Linoleum Factory
Linoleum, a popular flooring material, got its start right in Travis, Staten Island. In the late 1800’s, one of Travis’ former names was Linoleumville due to the American Linoleum Manufacturing Company being built in the neighborhood. It was founded in 1872 by Walton and Joseph Wild and provided jobs to locals while adding to economic growth in Staten Island. In 1882, the company became one of the first users of electricity when it installed electric lights to facilitate work at night. This allowed the workers to be more productive and was truly a great achievement.
