About Bloomfield

Bloomfield, Staten Island is the part of the borough located north of Travis, west of Bulls Head, and south of Arlington. Living in Bloomfield, Staten Island, is a bit different from other parts of the island. It’s more of an industrial area, so residential homes here are limited. Instead, the neighborhood is known for its commercial developments and businesses, like warehouses and offices. However, it's close to many residential neighborhoods, where you can find homes with a suburban feel. It’s close to public transportation and hotels, which makes it a great place for visitors to stay.

History of Bloomfield

Name Changes

Bloomfield, Staten Island has undergone several name changes. During the 17th century, the Staten Island West Shore community was known as Daniell's Neck during the 17th century, and then later named Merrell Town, after a farmer in the area. Soon after it was referred to as Watchogue, and finally it was called Bloomfield around 1874.

Saw Mill Creek Marsh

The Saw Mill Creek area was an essential spot for the Lenape Native Americans and then the colonists who settled there. The rich salt marshes on Staten Island's western shore provided plenty of food, which is why the Lenape were so connected to the Saw Mill Creek Marsh. They gathered oysters from the creek and grew crops such as corn, squash, and beans.

An Evolving Purpose

Bloomfield was not considered residential in its early days. Most of the land was used by construction companies to store heavy equipment, like cement mixers, and there was a large oil storage terminal run by Gulf Oil.  The area started seeing more commercial development in the late 1980s, with big office buildings constructed.

2000’s and Beyond

Two hotels opened on South Avenue in Bloomfield–Hilton Garden Inn in 2001 and Hampton Inn & Suites in 2007. In 2018, the Matrix Global Logistics Park opened, bringing Amazon, Ikea, and over 2,000 jobs to the area.
