About New Springville
New Springville is a centrally located neighborhood in Staten Island, one of New York's five boroughs. Founded in 1680 as Karle's Neck Village, it was later renamed New Springville due to the numerous freshwater springs in the area. The neighborhood remained predominately rural until the mid-20th century. The opening of the E.J. Korvette department store in 1964, coinciding with the completion of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, marked the beginning of significant population growth and commercial development. The transformation continued with the opening of the Staten Island Mall in 1973, which later helped turned New Springville into the larger presence it is today.
Today, New Springville is known for its extensive retail offerings, largely centered around the Staten Island Mall. The area has become a major public transportation hub, second only to the St. George Ferry Terminal. Six city bus routes, including the S79 which goes to Brooklyn, serve the neighborhood. Additionally, the Yukon Bus Depot, opened in the early 1980s, can accommodate 380 buses. Despite this level of urbanization, New Springville still has an old-world charm, exemplified by the 19th-century LaTourette House, listed on the National Register of Historic places.
