About Rosebank

Rosebank is a neighborhood in Northeastern Staten Island, New York, bordered by Clifton to the North, Arrochar to the South, and the Upper New York Bay to the East. Originally named Peterstown, then Clifton and the Village of the Edgewater, it acquired the name Rosebank around 1880. Before this, Rosebank was known as the “Newport, Rhode Island” of New York, home to grand estates owned by some of the wealthiest families in the country. Notable residents included the Vanderbilts, Aspinwalls, and Townsends, who built and attended St. John’s Episcopal Church.

The neighborhood then saw significant change in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, much like other communities in this area. The large estates and farms were divided into smaller parcels, and Italian immigrants began settling in the area. This way of immigration has left a lasting mark on the community, evident in the prominence of the Garibaldi Memorial. Rosebank is also home to historic sites such as the Alice Austen House and the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum. These landmarks reflect the neighborhood’s heritage in such a great way.
