Of the five boroughs of New York City, Staten Island is the third largest in area but the least populated. A mixture of single-family and multi-family properties, Staten Island homes are as diverse as the community itself.
The North Shore, which is the most urban area of the island, is home to the St. George Historic District and the St. Paul’s Avenue-Stapleton Heights Historic District, and stunning Victorian estates. The more suburban South Shore and Mid Island are home to classic single-family houses.
Once home to the world’s largest landfill, Staten Island is now referred to as “the Greenest Borough.” With over 12,300 acres of protected parkland, one third of the island is covered in green, and the now-closed landfill is being turned into a public park. From marinas to golf courses, there are plenty of green spaces for those living in Staten Island houses to enjoy. Great Hills Park offers picturesque views of the Eastern Shore, and the miles of trails, life-guarded beach, and casual restaurants make this one of the best parks on Staten Island.
The FDR Boardwalk runs along the Eastern Shore, stretching for over 2 miles and boasting one of the longest fishing piers in New York. The final noteworthy green area in Staten Island is the Greenbelt which is three times bigger than Central Park! Nature lovers and bird watchers find sanctuary in the wildlife-friendly, natural setting. Staten Island offers an extensive bus and rapid transport system, but it is the only borough not connected to the NYC subway system. It does, however, boast its very own world-famous ferry.
The Staten Island Ferry is not only free, it presents some of the best views in New York.
