Starting In the late 19th century, New Dorp Beach transformed into a popular summer destination for New Yorkers. The shoreline was known for the famous Cedar Grove Beach Club, which served as a private beach community.

With new bridges and better public transit making it easier to get to other vacation spots, New Dorp Beach started to become less popular as a summer getaway. Developers soon shifted gears and started focusing on building permanent homes instead of seasonal ones.

Along the waterfront, wooden piers and hotels were built, including the New Dorp Beach Hotel, which was situated on a large lot stretching across Cedar Grove Avenue and Marine Way. The Cedar Grove Beach Club also developed and featured a row of summer bungalows. There was even a hospital called Seaside Hospital there in the late 1800’s.
