About New Dorp
New Dorp is a fantastic community located on the East Shore of Staten Island, New York. One of the earliest European settlements in the New York City area, New Dorp was founded by Dutch settlers from the New Netherland colony. Its name is an anglicization of "Nieuw Dorp," which means "New Village" in Dutch. New Dorp is bounded by Mill Road to the Southeast, Tysens Lane to the Southwest, Amboy and Richmond Roads to the Northwest, and Bancroft Avenue to the Northeast. Adjacent areas include Oakwood, Todt Hill, Dongan Hills, Grant City, Midland Beach, and Miller Field. New Dorp Beach, though often listed separately on maps, is generally also considered part of New Dorp.
Historically, New Dorp was a significant town on Staten Island and became part of New York City in 1898 as part of the Borough of Richmond. The area is often associated with the Vanderbilt family, many of whom are buried in the Moravian Cemetery. Today, New Dorp remains one of Staten Island's main commercial and transport centers.
