Willowbrook State School

The Willowbrook State School, which opened in 1948, was the largest facility globally for individuals with developmental disabilities at the time. During World War II, it temporarily became the U.S. Army’s Halloran Hospital and a prisoner-of-war camp. Then, it became a school again in 1951. Decades later, journalist Geraldo Rivera revealed how terrible living conditions were at the school. His work prompted a lawsuit that revolutionized the care for developmentally disabled people across the country. Today, the location is the site of The College of Staten Island.

Bridge-Related Changes in Willowbrook

The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge opened in 1964, causing an influx of people to the neighborhood. This event led to an increase in population and a greater need for residential housing and the closing of farms. Since a majority of new homeowners were Jewish families, Willowbrook soon became the center of Staten Island’s Jewish orthodox community.
