The Early Days

Richmond Valley, Staten Island was once farmland until early settlers like the Disosway and Cole families arrived. Cornelius Disosway's grist mill on Mill Creek Pond dated back to before 1772 and was the first commercial establishment in the area. In the 1870s, Abram Cole and his sons established a successful coal and lumber business at the end of Richmond Valley Road on the waterfront. At one time, four separate Cole family households were at the corner of Richmond Valley Rd. and Arthur Kill Rd., and so the area was known as "Cole's Corner."

Getting Its Name

Richmond Valley was actually just a part of Tottenville at first. When a post office opened in Richmond Valley in 1828, the neighborhood was officially established as a separate entity. When the Staten Island Railway extended to Tottenville in 1860, a station was built in Richmond Valley, which still operates today. This led to more people moving to the area.

Public School 2
