History of Lighthouse Hill

Lighthouse Hill, originally known as Richmond Hill, got its name when the Staten Island Lighthouse, also called the Staten Island Range Light or Richmond Light, started to operate on April 15, 1912.

The Lighthouse

The lighthouse’s octagonal tower, designed by architect George R. King and engineer Frank D. Leavitt, stands 90 feet tall and sits a little over 140 feet above sea level on the hill. The lighthouse was built to work alongside the West Bank Lighthouse in Lower New York Bay, with its light originally visible up to 21 miles away. It was designated a New York City landmark in 1968 and continues to automatically aid ships.
