History of Sunset Hill

Factoryville

Once farmland, the area became booming with factories and businesses in the 1800s, and was named Factoryville by textile entrepreneur Nathan Barrett. He founded Barrett, Tileston & Co., the island’s first industrial business, which specialized in textile dyeing, printing, and fabric cleaning. Local entrepreneurs started to build European-style homes near their businesses out of convenience. Many of these elegant homes, including Victorian and Greek Revival styles, still stand today

Dorothy Valentine Smith House

Sunset Hill continued to be home to affluent families throughout the 19th century. One home is the Dorothy Valentine Smith house, located at 1213 Cloved Road, which became a historic landmark in 1987. She was a founding member of the Richmondtown Restoration. The house was built by her father, John Frederick Smith, who was a prominent Staten Island banker. Its Queen Anne style includes elements such as a wraparound porch and a tall chimney.

Gardiner-Tyler House

The Greek Revival home at 27 Tyler Street, built in 1835, was the residence of Julia Gardiner Tyler, who married President John Tyler in 1844. This historic house showcases classic Greek Revival architecture with beautiful columns and a symmetrical design. Julia Gardiner Tyler, known for her role as First Lady, added historical significance to the property, which remains an important example of early 19th-century architecture in Sunset Hill.
