Spotlight on South Street Seaport

The South Street Seaport is a historic area of New York City, located in Manhattan next to the Financial District and bounded by the East River. The area is a designated historic district and features some of the oldest architecture in Manhattan with a large number of restored 19th-century commercial buildings. The Seaport features renovated mercantile buildings and historic sailing ships, as well as modern shops and nightlife.

Visitors to the area should make sure to make time for the South Street Seaport Museum. Founded in 1967, the museum has served for years as an educational historic site, and in 1998 was designated by Congress as one of several museums which together make up “America’s National Maritime Museum.” It sits within the 12 square-block historic district that is the site of the original port of New York City. Laslty , the museum has over 30,000 square feet of exhibition space and educational facilities, such as a working 19th-century print shop, maritime library, archeology museums, and fleet of historic ships.

Shopping

The shopping in South Street ranges from historic craftsmen shops to modern malls. Pier 17 is home to many shops — like the Seaport Paw, selling specialty dog treats and toys — and a food court. Historic shops like Bowne & Co. – a stationer which traces its roots back to 1775 – are equal part shopping and education. Above all, Seaport Studios is a two-story collection of artisan wares and art installations with a rotating list of craftsmen selling their items and showcasing their work on a revolving basis.
In addition, the South Street Seaport has no shortage of great places to eat and drink. Grab some tacos at El Luchador or sip your drink from one of the outdoor couches by Industry Kitchen. From Memorial Day through October, you can partake from one of the many delicious vendors along the Seaport Smorgasborg. If you’re looking for something a bit more historic, there’s Fresh Salt, which serves up modern food in a former smokehouse built in 1885.
