Chelsea is a neighborhood on the West Side of Manhattan, with 14th Street to the south, 30th Street to the north, the western boundary of the Ladies’ Mile Historic District – which lies between the Avenue of the Americas (Sixth Avenue) and Seventh Avenue – to the east, and the Hudson River and West Street to the west. To the north of Chelsea is the neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen, as well as the Hudson Yards; to the northeast is the Garment District; to the east are NoMad and the Flatiron District; to the southwest is the Meatpacking District, and to the southeast is Greenwich Village and the West Village.
This famously diverse and artistic neighborhood is – somewhat surprisingly – mostly residential. Chelsea Real Estate is a mix of tenements, apartment blocks, city housing projects, townhouses, and renovated rowhouses which line narrow and quiet streets while it’s public and business spaces reflect the ethnic and social diversity of its residents. There is an excellent cross section of real estate options in Chelsea, making it one of the most desirable communities in Manhattan. It’s also convenient to public transportation, so it’s ideal for commuters.
With over 350 art galleries, Chelsea is a thriving neighborhood for creative folks to both live and work. Along with the art galleries, Chelsea is home to the Rubin Museum of Art, the Graffiti Research Lab and New York Live Arts, which produces dance and other movement-based arts productions. Theatre and dance are also at home in Chelsea, at the Joyce Theater and The Kitchen. The Chelsea Lofts district – the former fur and flower district – is located roughly between Sixth and Seventh Avenues from 23rd to 30th streets. The McBurney “Y” relocated from West 23rd Street to a new facility on 14th Street, the neighborhood’s southern border, continuing their tradition of serving this community.
Chelsea Market beckons with a variety of shopping and dining options, including bakeries, a fish market, and a wine store, while an expansive and exciting sprawl of shopping offers everything from small boutique to major chain store options.
The entertainment and sports complex Chelsea Piers was once the city’s primary luxury ocean liner terminal (and the destination of the RMS Titanic!). Now it offers recreational activities, live concerts, and events, with its southern section part of the Hudson River Park.
The entire Hudson River waterfront from 59th Street to the Battery is currently being transformed into a joint city/state park, which gives Chelsea residents a fantastic space to run, jog, star gaze and just enjoy the stunning water views.
Some of the best schools in the city are located in Chelsea, including the O’Henry School, the Chelsea School and the Bayard Rustin Educational Complex (Quest to Learn, Hudson High School of Learning Technologies, Humanities Preparatory Academy, James Baldwin School, Landmark High School, and Manhattan Business Academy). Private schools in the neighborhood include Avenues: The World School, and the Catholic Xavier High School.
Chelsea is also home to the Fashion Institute of Technology, The School of Visual Arts, the High School of Fashion Industries, and the Institute of Culinary Education.
The melting pot of Chelsea results in a vibrant, exciting community where the best of New York City is boiled down to one large neighborhood. Real estate options are just as varied as its populace – bright and airy studios to rowhouses renovated for single-family use. Renovated historic townhouses, luxury buildings, converted loft space – Chelsea homes for sale offer everything New York City has to offer.
