And so it is!! Staten Island Advance announced the exciting news that our very own Robert DeFalco is this year’s Staten Island Fig Fest Grand Marshal!! Fig Fest is a relatively new event, having begun in 2010, but it is already a Staten Island staple.
Fig Fest has outgrown its original location at the Turtle Fountain in Midland Beach and has since been held in several places on Staten Island, with an ever-growing audience of Fig lovers and Gardening enthusiasts! This year, for the first time, the festival has incorporated the title of “Grand Marshal”, to complement the traditional “Fig King”. We could not be more honored and excited that the festival chose our own Robert DeFalco to be the first-ever Fig Fest Grand Marshal! From the article:
Robert, now a New Jersey resident, is known for gifting fig trees to fans of the ancient fruit. He and his daughter Amanda typically take a weekend in summer to plant the specimens in appropriate places of Staten Islander’s yards. Robert customarily scouts the property and, depending on the light and terrain, plants and fertilizes the creature. He also tends a prolific garden, the bounty of which he gives away to colleagues and friends.
This year’s Fig Fest took place at Killmeyer’s Old Bavaria Inn in Charleston on Sept. 15, 2016. Robert, as Grand Marshal, emceed the event!
