The Britton Cottage
The Britton Cottage dates back to 1671 when it was located at the intersection of New Dorp Lane and Cedar Grove Avenue in New Dorp Beach. It is made of stone and timber frame components and was threatened with demolition in 1967. Instead, it was carefully moved to Historic Richmondtown where residents and visitors can see it today.
Post-Civil War Era
After the Civil War, New Dorp Beach began to thrive as a resort destination. Campgrounds and seasonal bungalows started appearing. Along the waterfront, wooden piers and hotels were built, including the New Dorp Beach Hotel, which was situated on a large lot stretching across Cedar Grove Avenue and Marine Way. The Cedar Grove Beach Club also developed and featured a row of summer bungalows. There was even a hospital called Seaside Hospital there in the late 1800’s.
