History of Meiers Corners

Namesake

Meiers Corners gets its name from Joachim Meier, a notable Dutch resident from the 18th century. He lived in the stone Martling-Cozine House that stood near the corner of Watchogue Road and Bradley Avenue until it was torn down in 1981. At one time, Italian immigrants kept goats at their homes in the area, and so people referred to Meiers Corners as” Nanny Goat Hill.” It’s also been called “Dogpatch” by who got the name from Al Capp’s cartoon character, L’il Abner’s fictional setting.
