Todt Hill Iron Mines

Iron mining took place on the hill in the 1800’s, so the area was also once known as "Yserberg," Dutch for “Iron Hill.” People found that there was an abundance of iron ore in Staten Island’s rock. Since the ore was close to the surface, it made mining easy. By the 1880s, iron deposits around Lake Superior dominated American iron mining as they were more efficient, and eventually the Staten Island mines stopped operating.Todt Hill began attracting affluent residents in the 19th century and they built summer estates there.
