History of Latourette

A Family Farm

LaTourette Park was once a farm owned by David and Ann LaTourette, who started it back in 1830. It became one of Staten Island's top farms, known for its quality produce. In 1928, the LaTourette family sold the land to New York City, and it eventually became part of the park system. 

Heyerdahl Hill

The area also has historical significance on one of the hills, Heyerdahl Hill. The British used it as a useful vantage point to watch for American troops. Remnants of old vineyards are still visible there. 

Present Day

The original farmhouse is gone, but the LaTourette’s 1870 mansion still stands and now serves as a golf course clubhouse. The park is also part of Staten Island's Greenbelt, offering a mix of forest habitats, hiking trails, and recreational activities like golf and model airplane flying. The park also supports diverse wildlife, with efforts to reintroduce species like the Gray Tree frog and Baltimore Checkerspots butterflies.

It’s actually part of Richmond Hill Road, located just past LaTourette Golf Course and leading down to Arthur Kill Road and Historic Richmond Town. 

Historic Richmondtown
