Considered a part of South Brooklyn until 1964, Carroll Gardens takes its name from the deep front gardens through most of the neighborhood, and Revolutionary War veteran (and signer of the Declaration of Independence) Charles Carroll.
These famous gardens are an unusual feature in most Brooklyn brownstones, and are often bordered by decorative wrought-iron fences and occasionally ornamented with the Madonna statuettes that some call “Mary on the half shell.”
Originally settled by Irish immigrants, who were followed by Norwegian immigrants, Carroll Gardens became an enclave of Italians in the late 19th century. The proportion of Italian-Americans has been dropping for decades, according to census data, from 52 percent in 1980 to 22 percent by 2012. Italian businesses and restaurants still remain a part of the scenery.
“The types of homes available to people looking for Carroll Gardens real estate range from one- or two-bedroom apartments in historic brownstones to single-family homes. Many of these residences have been renovated, with modern kitchens and bathrooms alongside beautiful brick walls and hardwood floors. A combination of period charm and modern convenience makes most residences in Carroll Gardens a perfect place to call home.”
The neighborhood features a “restaurant row”, with delis, boutiques, classic Italian eateries, and even Jewish-Asian cuisine. There are cafes, antique shops, bars and pizzerias. The area boasts excellent school districts and the Brooklyn Public Library. Transportation is available through the NYC subway system and MTA buses.
The neighborhood also features Carroll Park, a block-long area of playgrounds and walkways, which was originally planned as a private garden. It’s near the Carroll Gardens Historic District, and includes some of the finest examples of brownstones with large front gardens.
