One of five boroughs of New York City, Staten Island is the least populated yet largest in area. A mixture of single-family and multi-family properties, Staten Island homes are as diverse as the community itself. In North Shore you can find stunning Victorian estates, while South Shore and Mid Island are home to classic, suburban single-family houses. There are also many condos and townhomes scattered throughout the entire borough.
Though Staten Island is the only borough not connected to the NYC subway system, there is an extensive bus and rapid transport system, and the Staten Island Ferry shuttles visitors and commuters to and from Manhattan. Residents of the area take advantage of the free ferry and revel in the stunning views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and Lower Manhattan.
Staten Island real estate is surrounded by a variety of amenities and attractions, making the borough a desirable place to live. The natural space on the island makes it a wonderful location for outdoor activities, from bike riding and hiking to fishing and kayaking. The lively art, music and theater scene in New York City is preserved in Staten Island, which is home to a variety of museums and theaters.
In 1929, the St. George Theatre was opened, and swiftly became a popular venue for vaudeville and movies. Today, the theater is opened to visitors to showcase the striking lobby, so that they may enjoy the ornate Spanish/Italian design in the historic building. Currently, Staten Island residents can be found enjoying concerts, plays, comedy shows and more at the famous St. George Theatre.
Referred to as "The Smithsonian of Staten Island", Snug Harbor Cultural Center is an unparalleled collection of museums, art galleries and is home to New York City's 2nd oldest concert hall. The variety of gardens should not be missed, and natives and visitors alike can be found wandering through the hedge maze in the Secret Garden or chasing Monarchs in the butterfly garden.
Once home to the world's largest landfill, Staten Island is now referred to as "the Greenest Borough." With over 12,300 acres of protected parkland, one third of the island is covered in green, and the now-closed landfill is being turned into a public park. From marinas to golf courses, there are plenty of green spaces for those living in Staten Island houses to enjoy.
Great Hills Park offers picturesque views of the Eastern Shore, and the miles of trails, life guarded beach, and casual restaurants make this one of the best parks on Staten Island. The South Beach Boardwalk can be found alongside the Eastern Shore, and it stretches over 2 miles. Home of one the longest fishing piers in New York, and a pristine, life guarded beach, the boardwalk is a haven for tourists, fishermen and beach-goers alike. The final noteworthy green area in Staten Island is the Greenbelt which is three times bigger than Central Park. Nature lovers can be found wandering the miles of trails and bird watchers find sanctuary in the wildlife-friendly, natural setting.
