The Lenni Lanape Native Americans first inhabited the area now known as Marlboro Township and had a population of approximately 20,000 in 1600. The original European settler purchased the area in the 1620’s. The township was named after "marl," a calcium-carbonate mineral prevalent in the area. Farmers used marl to improve their soil before fertilizers were available. Marlboro’s first industry centered on the exporting of this product.
