New York City’s Diamond District is located along a single block stretch of 47th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues in Midtown Manhattan. It is located within walking distance of other notable Manhattan attractions, such as Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall, and the Broadway Theater District. The Diamond District is one of the hubs of the global diamond industry, offering the largest shopping district for diamonds and other fine jewelry in the world. More than 2,600 independent businesses are located here, nearly all of which deal in precious gems and jewelry. The district developed during the 1940s when an influx of Jewish jewelers set up shop in New York after fleeing the Netherlands and Belgium when the Nazi’s invaded.
An unbelievable 90% of all diamonds entering the United States will make their way through New York City, and most of those will go through the Diamond District. A single day of business on this block generates an average of $400 million. The Gemological Institute of America, which trains gem dealers, is also located within the district.
As a section of Midtown, the “Diamond” in the district’s name doesn’t just refer to the ones in the storefront windows. Look here to find a gem of an apartment or penthouse for sale at diamond-level New York prices. Many buildings include great amenities like an in-house gym, doorman, and new appliances in the units.
