Colts Neck was settled in the 1600’s and formed from parts of Middletown, Shrewsbury and Freehold. A tavern built around 1717 which is now the Colts Neck Inn served as headquarters for the revolutionaries during the Revolutionary War. The General Store created in 1848 on the Colts Neck Turnpike provided local shopping, gas pumps were added in the 1940’s and it still stands today, looking very similar to its 1800’s appearance.
