Tottenville, formerly known as “Bentley Manor” lies on the Southern end of Staten Island.

The most original known residents to settle in Tottenville were the Algonquin Indians. Many Native American Indians populated areas from West Brighton, all the way through to Tottenville, leaving this area as one of the largest known burial grounds for American Indians. Conference House Park now protects this site known as Burial Ridge.

Although Belgium and Dutch travelers settled upon the land, neither populated the area without conflict from the Native Americans. It was not until 1630 that the British began to colonize the North Shore of Staten Island.

This beautiful 1.7 mile area was then broken up, leaving an English officer and settler named Captain Christopher Billop to be granted with a 932 acre tract which then turned into 1600 acres.

Now, Tottenville homes many different historical structures from The Conference House to The Henry Hogg Biddle House.

The sandy type soils in the area were helpful in producing fruits and vegetables, while the rest of the land was cultivated to produce crops of corn, potatoes, wheat and rye.
